Cancer Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation

Cancer Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation

Did you know that Asia accounts for 60% of the world population and half the global burden of cancer? According to The Cancer Atlas, regionally, cancer is projected to increase by 41% (from 6.4 million in 2012 to 9 million by 2025) for incidence and 44% for mortality (from 4.3 million to 6.2 million), largely due to socio-economic growth, and the increasing size and aging of the population.

We don’t want to scare you. We want to change these statistics and support patients in their healing.

Our Cancer Pre-habilitation program is designed to enhance the functional, emotional and healing capacity of a patient before, during and after surgical invasive procedures, scans, radiation, and chemotherapy to withstand the stress of the treatment.

Diagnosis of cancer and the treatment period is a difficult time for patients, with them experiencing heightened anxiety, fear, and depression. This impacts their immunity as well as their recovery. Our program s a patient get physically and emotionally stronger as they go through treatment.

We focus on providing you with the tools for increased resilience, reduced anxiety, cognitive restructuring to identify catastrophic thinking, stress coping strategies, relaxation and yogic breathing. We also prepare you psychologically for surgery and invasive procedures via clinical hypnosis, advanced counseling techniques and very importantly, psychoneuroimmunology.

Bernie Siegel in his book “Love, Medicine and Miracles” shares that unconditional love is the most powerful stimulant of the immune system. He describes how changing the perception of chemotherapy as an ‘ally’, and visualising the immune system going to work to defeat cancer cells, ed patients significantly with lifestyle changes.

This program uses four well established scientific and psycho-therapeutic techniques to support the emotional and physical well-being of our patients:

What patients can expect:

  • Better mood and emotional resilience to cope with radiation, chemo and surgical interventions
  • Reduced anxiety over needles, claustrophobia, anticipatory anxiety and scanning procedures, PEG fitting
  • Psychological boost to support immunity
  • To cultivate a positive mindset towards treatment and outcome
  • Achieve a more relaxed state during invasive treatment
  • Speedier post surgery recovery and shorter hospital stay after surgery

Throughout the program, fears, personal and existential issues are discussed in a supportive, safe, confidential, and caring environment.  Both realistic and unrealistic worries are examined.  You are gently introduced to concepts such as resilience, acceptance, mindfulness, meditation and self-soothing methods.

The focus is on guiding you to redirect your thoughts back to the present, here and now, while distracted with future concerns.

Duration: This program is highly personalised and is conducted over 8 sessions through one-to-one private sessions. The structure, flow and timing varies based on the patients’ needs and priorities.

Age Group: 18 years and above
